Corona virus – Japan: Break the barrier of 100,000 cases in 24 hours

For the first time in two months the number of cases coronavirus broke, hitting 100,000 within 24 hours, Kyodo news agency reported. 111 patients succumbed to COVID-19.

The outbreak of infections follows the decision of the government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to abolish border controls and to promote a travel subsidy program to boost tourism last month.

As the country prepares for the so-called eighth wave of the pandemic, the number of cases of SARS-CoV-2 recorded yesterday (105,184) it was the highest in 24 hours from September 14 (100,260).

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island and a popular tourist destination, recorded 10,906 infections, an unprecedented number.

The official tally of victims of the new coronavirus pandemic in the archipelago has reached 47,826 dead in a total of 23.42 million infections, according to data from the Japanese Ministry of Health.
