Additional funds for the purchase of coronavirus vaccines in the next two years were approved today by the Plenary Session of the Parliament Austria. The decision was taken by a large majority.
Particularly, 916 million euros will be allocated for the Minister of Health in 2022 and 2023, while for the municipalities, the deadline for submitting applications for financial assistance was extended by one year.
The Austrian Parliament’s Finance Committee last week approved a legislative initiative to purchase vaccines against coronavirus within the next two years, authorizing the Minister of Health to procure the number of vaccines corresponding to Austria from the vaccines available in the European Union.
At the same time, it should be possible to make some available Covid-19 vaccines free in countries that are not among the poorest developing countries, while, in addition to participating in international distribution mechanisms, Austria also intends to support some countries bilaterally, according to the Athens News Agency.
Austrian Health Minister Wolfgang Mukstein had appeared convinced that the approved amount is “well invested money”, as he observed, with the 42 million doses of vaccines, the full potential of the quantity available for Austria will be exploited, because it is not known exactly what variants of viruses will exist in the future.
In addition, according to him, the price of the vaccines that have been ordered has not changed significantly, however now the clearly cheaper vaccines of a company like AstraZeneca are not bought, which leads to an increase in the average price.
