Coronavirus: Beijing is stepping up efforts to curb the outbreak

Beijing today stepped up quarantine efforts to end a month-long COVID outbreak as Shanghai complains of unfair restrictions as the city of 25 million prepares to lift a prolonged lockdown next day. week.

Although China’s drastic efforts to eradicate COVID are affecting the outlook for the world’s second-largest economy, new numbers of recorded infections remain well below those recorded in many Western cities. The capital recorded 48 new cases yesterday among its 22 million inhabitants, with Shanghai registering less than 500.

However, Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chunlan called for more meticulous measures to stop the spread of the virus and adhere to the country’s ‘zero COVID’ policy during a visit to Beijing, Xinhua news agency reported. The situation in Beijing is manageable, but containment efforts can not be relaxed, she said, according to Xinhua.

As an example of the severity of Beijing’s approach, about 1,800 people in a neighborhood of the city were relocated to Zhangjiajou, a nearby province of Hebei, for quarantine, the Beijing Daily reported. Meanwhile, 11 of Beijing’s 16 districts have issued classified instructions for teleworking, while public transportation across the capital has been restricted and some shopping malls and other venues are closed.

In Shanghai, authorities plan to keep most of the restrictions in place this month, before proceeding with a more comprehensive lifting of the two-month lockdown from June 1. Even then, there will be restrictions on the capacity of public spaces.

With Shanghai not reporting out-of-quarantine infections for most of last week, some officials have allowed more people to leave their homes for a short time and more supermarkets and pharmacies to reopen. However, other, lower-ranking officials tightened restrictions in some neighborhoods, ordering residents to close their homes again to consolidate the progress made so far. However, this has caused frustration and complaints of unequal treatment by residents.
