The US will double the doses vaccines for coronavirus pledged to donate to poor countries, reaching 1.1 billion, the US President announced today Joe Biden.
The American president could have made the announcement yesterday, in his speech at the UN General Assembly, but he preferred to make it today (22/9), at the web conference organized on the initiative of Washington, according to the APE-MPE.
“I have made a promise and I keep it, that America will be the arsenal of vaccines for the whole world, as it was the arsenal of democracy during World War II,” he said from the White House, surrounded by screens.
For each dose of vaccine given within the United States, Washington will donate three to other countries, clarified Biden.
The meeting was attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the presidents of South Africa and Indonesia, and many officials from the United Nations and the World Health Organization.
Within a year, Washington will convene a cabinet meeting to examine “our collective progress,” Biden added in his speech. “We also need other high-income countries to deliver on their ambitious promises,” he said of vaccine donations.
The US will buy and distribute 500 million doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine to Covid-19 in developing countries, bringing the number of doses they donate to 1.1 billion.
The two companies, in a joint statement, clarified that these installments are made in the USA and will be distributed to 92 developing countries to be nominated by the international Covax mechanism and to the 55 members of the African Union. All installments will be distributed by the end of August 2022.
To date, the United States has delivered approximately 160 million doses to more than 100 countries.
