Coronavirus: Case record in Japan – Delta mutation ‘guilty’

Coronavirus infections are on the rise at unprecedented rates Japan as a record number of new cases were announced today both in Tokyo and nationally. The outbreak of the pandemic in the country is overshadowing the Olympic Games and at the same time intensifying the criticism for its management by the government.

The variant strain Delta of coronavirus causes a spread of cases “never seen before”, said Japanese Health Minister Norihisa Tamura, defending the government’s new policy that patients with mild symptoms of covid-19 should remain in isolation in their homes and not being transported to hospitals.

“The pandemic has entered a new phase (…) If we do not have enough beds, we can not bring people to hospitals. “We are acting proactively on this issue,” he told parliament.

But Tamura added that this policy may change, as it has caused a lot of criticism from health professionals, who fear that in this way the lives of many people are endangered.

According to the Athenian Macedonian News Agency, Japan is facing a rapid rise in covid-19 cases. Today, the Tokyo authorities announced that 4,166 new infections were registered in the previous 24 hours, a record number. Nationwide, 14,207 new cases of covid-19 were detected in Japan in the last 24 hours, which is also a record.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and the organizers of the Olympic Games claim that the international sporting event is not linked to the rapid rise in coronavirus cases in Japan.

Nevertheless, health experts complain that the conduct of the Games sent confused messages to the citizens about the need to stay in their homes, contributing to the spread of the disease.
