Coronavirus – China: Deaths rise in Shanghai despite harsh lockdown

Shanghai remains in the vortex of the coronavirus as well despite the hard lockdown the death toll reached 87, with 39 being recorded in the last 24 hourswhile during the corresponding period 22,000 cases were identified.

THE China has been facing its worst outbreak in recent weeks since the outbreak of the health crisis two years ago and has severely curtailed almost all of its 25 million financial capital, Shanghai, since the beginning of April.

From the manifestation of his pandemic coronavirus, originally identified in central China in late 2019, Beijing has managed – at least according to official figures – to keep the death toll below 5,000 dead and the number of infections around 200,000 in total. These numbers, dramatically lower than those reported internationally, are generally considered very undervalued.

Nevertheless, the outbreak attributed to the Omicron variant continues to plague Shanghai, which remains under severe indefinite restraint, in some cases Spartan conditions.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that immunization rates are relatively lowespecially among the elderly.

The 39 people who died were elderly with underlying diseasesespecially hypertension, clarified the health authorities.

In all, nearly half a million infections have been confirmed in China’s largest urban center since early March.

A thousand kilometers away, the capital Beijing also announced that 22 cases had been confirmed and warned that it would take “urgent” action to stop the spread of the virus. “The situation is very serious, the whole city needs to take action without delay,” said Pang Singhuo, a health official at the capital, who said SARS-CoV-2 was probably spreading “invisibly” in recent days.
