Coronavirus: Europe has exceeded 100 million cases

At the moment of the Covid-19 pandemic, Europe has exceeded the limit of 100 million recorded cases from the discovery of the virus in December 2019, ie more than a third of the total infections worldwide, according to a count of the French Agency, by today at 20.45 Greek time.

The 100,074,753 infections recorded in Europe (52 countries and territories from the Atlantic coast to Azerbaijan and Russia) represent more than a third of the 288,279,803 cases recorded worldwide since the beginning of the pandemic.

With more than 4.9 million infections reported in the last seven days (59% more than last week), the area is currently facing unprecedented levels of cases.

The ten countries with the highest incidence rate (number of cases in seven days per 100,000 inhabitants) worldwide are all in Europe. Among others, Denmark (with an impact of 2,045), and Ireland (with an impact of 1,964).

In France, more than 1 million cases (1,103,555) have been detected in the last seven days, or almost 10% of the total number of cases recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Among the 52 countries and territories that make up the region of Europe, 17 of them broke their record cases in the last few days in one week.

These figures are based on reports published daily by the health authorities of each country. A significant proportion of less severe or asymptomatic cases remain undetectable despite the intensification of testing in many countries, from the beginning of the pandemic, to the discovery of the virus in late 2019. In addition, testing policies vary from country to country.

The acceleration of infections is not currently accompanied by an increase in deaths on the European continent. An average of 3,413 daily deaths were recorded in Europe in the last seven days, a number down 7% from last week. At its highest level, that number had reached the continent an average of 5,735 deaths per day in January 2021.
