French Prime Minister Jean Castex said today (27/12) that in response to the rapid spread of Omicron mutation of coronavirus, the government reduces to three months from four the time period for a third booster dose, but there will be no traffic ban on New Year’s Eve.
Castex also said that from today, Monday, and for the next three weeks, all public gatherings will be limited to 2,000 people for indoor events and 5,000 people for outdoor events.
Drinking and eating will be prohibited on long-distance transport and long-distance routes. Homework will be mandatory for at least three days a week where possiblesaid Castex.
Mandatory use of mask outdoors
The government also decided to make it mandatory to use the mask outdoors in city centers, under the supervision of local government representatives.
“I know it’s like an endless movie, but a year ago we started our vaccination campaign and now we are one of the best vaccinated and best protected peoples in the world,” Castex told a news conference after the cabinet meeting.
Castex said the vaccine pass the government plans to adopt – which will require a vaccination certificate, not just a negative test – will take effect on Jan. 15 if parliament approves a government bill.
The French prime minister also said that only seated customers would be able to eat and drink at bars and restaurants, not standing customers.
Unlike other countries that have delayed the return of children to school, French schools will reopen as scheduled for January 3, Castex said.
The French prime minister stressed that the incidence of Covid – the number of infections per 100,000 people per week – is now well over 700 and at a record level since the epidemic began in the country.
