Brazil continues to rank second in the world in terms of the number of pandemic victims, behind the United States, and third in the number of cases.
While the US and Europe are experiencing a decline in pandemic outbreaks, Brazil is facing an even worse phase of the epidemic, pushing the health system to the brink of collapse.
The rising number of infections has led to local restrictions in the capital, Brasilia, and the largest city, Sao Paulo.
Of particular concern to health authorities is the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus first detected in the Amazon region, which appears to be more contagious and more capable of re-infecting those previously infected with Covid-19.
The government’s delay in obtaining and distributing vaccines also means that less than 3.5% of the population has received the first dose of one of the available vaccines.
Chile: Over 5,300 cases and 90 deaths in 24 hours
The Chilean Ministry of Health announced on Friday that 5,325 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, the highest number recorded by the authorities since June 2020, while another 90 patients with COVID-19 had died.

The deaths of another 30 patients with COVID-19 have increased the pandemic toll to 13,537 at this stage, according to official figures.
Mexico: 712 deaths and almost 6,800 cases in 24 hours
