Coronavirus: Great Concern in Australia – Lockdown Extends in New South Wales

Concern is strong in its most populous state Australia, New South Wales as fears are expressed about its spread Delta mutation from Sydney to the countryside. So today it was announced that the lockdown will be extended to the city of Tamworth.

According to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, State Prime Minister Gladys Beretziklian announces restrictive measures in this rural community as people confirmed to be infected flew from Sydney to Tamworth, about 414 miles northwest, without permission from authorities.

“As a precaution, public health experts have recommended that we impose a lockdown in Tamworth for a week,” Beretziklian told reporters in Sydney.

Officials also urged people in the Byron Bay area to be vaccinated as a man traveled from Sydney, the epicenter of the current outbreak of a new coronavirus in Australia, to this tourist destination, 767 kilometers to the north.

In the past 24 hours, 283 cases of the new coronavirus have been diagnosed in New South Wales, up from 262 the previous year.

Authorities in the state are finding it difficult to stem the spread of the most contagious Delta variant, despite a lockdown for a seventh consecutive week.

The neighboring state of Victoria, on the other hand, announced that the restrictive measures would be relaxed, as 11 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were diagnosed, equal to the previous one.

Most of the people confirmed to be infected have been in contact with other people in the community, but state Prime Minister Daniel Andrews has announced that the lockdown in Victoria, outside its capital, will be lifted today. Melbourne will remain in its sixth consecutive lockdown since the pandemic occurred at least until August 12th.

In Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, authorities identified four cases of local transmission on the first day after the restrictive measures were lifted.

The prime minister is being fired

The Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison is pushing harder and harder for the slow progress of the immunization campaign. Only 22% of Australians aged 16 and over have been fully vaccinated to date.

A Newspoll poll conducted by The Australian and published today indicates that its popularity has dropped to the lowest level since the pandemic, at 47% (-4%).

Mr. Morrison was very popular in April 2020 (85%), as the authorities were able to keep – by comparison – the pandemic under control.

At this stage, the death toll has reached 939 due to COVID-19 out of a total of 36,250 SARS-CoV-2 cases. A woman over 90 who died in the last 24 hours in Sydney was added to the victims today.

Prolonged austerity measures in Australia’s most populous city are expected to cause a downturn in the economy this quarter, Australian Finance Minister Josh Freidenberg predicted last month.

In New Zealand

In neighboring New Zealand, where a new outbreak of coronavirus has been diagnosed in the community since February, it was announced today that 11 of the 21 crew members of the container ship Rio De La Plata, which is sailing off the north coast of the country , it has been confirmed that they have been infected.

As a precaution, 94 dockers who boarded the ship while it was moored in a New Zealand port were warned to take a test and not come to work until they had a negative result.
