Turkey recorded 14,941 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest increase since the beginning of the year, according to data released yesterday by the Ministry of Health, almost two weeks after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a partial easing of measures.
The number of cases recorded daily has almost doubled compared to the previous month. This increase is attributed by the authorities to the new variants of SARS-CoV-2.
Erdogan announced the eschools, cafes and restaurants reopened last week, while the lockdown also eased every weekend, as the number of new cases had dropped below 10,000.
The death toll from Covid-19 reached 29,356 after another 66 people were added to the long list of victims.
The total cases are 2,850,930.
To date, Turkey has received about 10.87 million doses of vaccine as part of an immunization campaign launched in mid-January. More than 7.88 million people have received one dose and almost 2.99 million both doses of the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech vaccine.
Ankara hopes to vaccinate 50 million people by autumn.
