Coronavirus – Japan: Two people who had been vaccinated against Moderna have died

Two people have died after being vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine coronavirus In Japan.

The doses belonged to batches of the vaccine that were later withdrawn, after the detection of contaminants, as announced today, the Ministry of Health of Japan.

These are two men in their 30s who died within a month, a few days after receiving their second dose. Moderna vaccine, the ministry said in a statement.

Each of them had received a dose from one of the three batches recalled on Thursday.

The cause of death is being investigated.

Japan has suspended the use of 1.63 million doses of Moderna vaccine shipped to 863 vaccination centers across the country, more than a week after distributor Takeda Pharmaceutical received reports of presence of impurities in some vials

The government and Moderna said no safety and efficacy problems had been identified, and the suspension was a precautionary measure.

The contamination is believed to be due to metal particles, as reported by Japan’s public television NHK, citing sources in the Ministry of Health.
