Coronavirus: More than 7,000 flights canceled worldwide over Christmas weekend

More than 7,000 flights were canceled from airlines around the world on Christmas weekend, as the Omicron variant continues to spread, disrupting movement during the holiday season, trapping pilots and quarantine crews.

Europe is currently the region with the highest number of cases in the world, with 3,022,868 cases in the last few days, ie 57% of the total number of cases, as well as the highest number of deaths. It is followed by the zone that includes the United States and Canada with 1,421,516 cases.

According to the latest report from the Flightaware website, 2,150 flights were canceled today and 5,798 were delayed.

656 of the canceled flights are international flights to and from the United States or domestic flights within the United States.

Yesterday, on Christmas Day, about 2,800 flights worldwide were canceled, about 1,000 flights related to the USA, while on Christmas Eve there were about 2,400 cancellations, 700 were related to the USA.

Pilots, flight attendants and other crew members were forced into quarantine after being exposed to the virus, forcing companies such as Lufthansa, Delta or United Airlines to shut down their aircraft.

Chinese airlines also canceled hundreds of flights: China Eastern canceled about 540, a quarter of its flight schedule, and Air China 267 flights, also a quarter of scheduled.
