Coronavirus: Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated in the Netherlands

An alarm has been sounded due to the outbreak of cases coronavirus in Holland. The government on Friday (9/7) announced new restrictions aimed at stopping the pandemic.

The new measures will be implemented a few weeks after the removal of the previous ones concern nightclubs, restaurants and music festivals.

The goal, according to the Athens News Agency, is to stop the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 infections, especially among young adults.

Its prime minister Ολλανδίας Mark Rutte stated that the measures will take effect from tomorrow, Saturday (10/7) morning, and will last until August 14.

“Two weeks ago all the indicators were in the green,” recalled Health Minister Hugo de Jongge. “But today, there is a reason we are intervening. “This is the result of the rapid spread of the Delta variant in Europe and the Netherlands.”

“It is unprecedented. Last week we had around 500 new cases on a daily basis. “Today, there are 7,000 new infections, especially among young people,” he said.

However, the new measures do not include a traffic ban, nor a mandatory use of a mask indoors, as in the past.

Rutte called on citizens to “follow the basic rules”, namely distances and hand washing. “If we do, we will be able to have a wonderful summer,” he said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in the Netherlands, 1.7 million cases of Covid-19 have been recorded and 17,700 dead. About 80% of the population has been vaccinated while 50% have been fully vaccinated, according to the Ministry of Health.
