Coronavirus – Peru: Interior minister resigns after riot over pandemic celebration

The Peruvian Minister of the Interior, Luis Barrançuela, resigned yesterday Tuesday, well before a month has passed since he took office, after the uproar he caused when organized a party at his home in the midst of the young man’s pandemic coronavirus. His resignation was accepted by the left-wing president Pedro Castillo.

The 58-year-old minister was harsh criticisms after the Latina television network broadcast that it organized a celebration at its home in Lima, on the occasion of the day of singing in the Creole language and its Halloween, something that had been explicitly banned by decree a few days earlier.

The interior minister, as reported by the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, defended himself on Monday, saying that did not organize a party, but a business meeting at his home, an explanation which the prime minister, Myrta Vasquez, rejected as “unacceptable”.

The Peruvian Congress, controlled by the right-wing opposition, will vote tomorrow, Thursday, to give – or not – a vote of confidence in Mrs Vasquez’s government. According to the Peruvian press, the vote of confidence would not have been given if the interior minister had not resigned.

The Peru of 33 million inhabitants has officially recorded 2.2 million cases of SARS-CoV-2, while deaths due to COVID-19 have exceeded 200,000. The Andean country ranks first in the world in terms of mortality per 100,000 inhabitants.
