The new infections in the previous 24 hours reached 3,900, more than double those of Monday, but still far from the record of 18,863 cases in 24 hours recorded in October, official data showed. Forty-seven people have died from the virus in the last 24 hours. As students return to the classroom, the number of cases is expected to increase further.

Romania tops the world list of coronavirus deaths

At the height of the fourth wave in late October and November, Romania topped the world list of new coronavirus deaths per million inhabitants. So far the pandemic has claimed the lives of 58,866 inhabitants of this country with a population of 20 million.

In October, Romanian senators overwhelmingly rejected a bill requiring medical staff, public sector workers and large private companies to have a Covid-19 health certificate, a provision aimed at promoting vaccination. .

Since then, the ruling coalition has been debating a new bill that would require a health card from most workers, but has not yet decided whether to send it to parliament for approval.

In December, protesters backed by a supranational opposition party tried to force their way into parliament in an attempt to block the passage of such a law.
