The Swedish Health Service on Monday (14/2) proposed the second boost of the vaccine against coronavirus (fourth in total) for those over 80 years of age to treat declining immunity amid the rapid spread of the Omicron mutation.
This recommendation applies to all people staying in nursing homes or receiving home care services in Sweden.
The fourth installment should be given at least four months after the third, the Service said in a statement, as broadcast by the Athens News Agency.
Sweden recorded infections at record levels earlier this year as Omicron spread across the country.
But the principles are based on boosting doses and milder symptoms of the variant to relieve the pressure on the health system, and this month the restrictions were lifted and the frequency of tests reduced.
Infections remain widespread, and the Department of Health says a growing number of cases in groups at increased risk for serious illness, such as nursing home inmates, have been reported in recent weeks.
«A booster dose boosts protection. “We therefore believe that people over the age of 80 will benefit from a fourth dose,” said Anders Tegnel, chief epidemiologist.
As with the third dose, the vaccines to be used will be Pfizer / Biontech or Moderna, the Service said.
