Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced tonight that all Israelis over the age of 60, as well as doctors and nurses, would be eligible for a fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine following a panel of experts.
“The people of Israel were the first in the world to receive the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and we remain at the forefront with the fourth dose,” said Bennett, urging those who meet the criteria “not to waste time, to rush to be vaccinated “.
The announcement came after the end of the cabinet meeting, which focused on the evolution of the pandemic, amid growing concerns about the spread of the Omicron variant.
The decision of the committee of experts to approve the granting of the fourth tranche is “excellent news that will help us to cross the Omicron wave that is hitting the world”, the prime minister added.
Immunocompromised patients will also be eligible for this fourth dose. It will be given at least four months after the third dose, the Ministry of Health clarified.
Bennett’s office added that the prime minister had instructed the Ministry of Health and the insurance funds – which administer the vaccines – to prepare the campaign for the fourth tranche.
The first death of a patient infected with the Omicron variant was announced earlier. According to the Soroka Medical Center, where he was treated, it was a man over 60 years old, who suffered from serious underlying diseases and was admitted for treatment two weeks ago in the ward of Covid-19.
According to the Ministry of Health, there are at least 340 confirmed cases of Omicron in Israel.
The Prime Minister’s Office also announced that the number of civil servants working in their offices will be reduced to 50%, in order to encourage teleworking.
