Coronavirus two black records and political crisis sink Colombia

Colombia on Thursday recorded 545 deaths of patients with COVID-19 in 24 hours, a tragic record since the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic in its territory in March 2020, exceeding the limit of 90,000 deaths so far, amid social crisis and anti-government uprising.

The Ministry of Health said the death toll had risen to 90,353, while SARS-CoV-2 infections had risen by 28,624 in 24 hours – a record – to more than 3.4 million.

Colombia is hit by a third wave of the pandemic, with the death toll at its highest level since the outbreak. The government of right-wing President Ivan Duce attributes in part the increase in infections to the mass mobilizations that have rocked the country since April 28. It is estimated that almost 60 people have been killed in the demonstrations and incidents.

Tens of thousands of people continue to take to the streets of Colombia’s largest cities every day to demand more social justice, police reform and a more solid state, including to alleviate the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

Authorities in the Latin American country are accelerating the pace of the population immunization campaign, they have given about 10.7 million doses of vaccines. Bogota hopes to have vaccinated 35.7 million people by the end of the year.

In terms of population, Colombia has the fourth-highest death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean, behind Peru, Brazil and Mexico.

Brazil: Nearly 1,700 deaths and over 83,000 cases in 24 hours

The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Thursday that in the previous 24 hours another 1,682 patients with COVID-19 were killed and another 83,391 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed.

The largest Latin American country has so far recorded 469,388 deaths out of a total of 16,803,472 infections.

Deaths have fallen compared to the peak of the second wave in April, but remain at a consistently high level.

Brazil officially records the second heaviest pandemic in the world, behind only the United States, and the third highest number of infections, behind the United States and India.

Argentina: 553 deaths and over 32,000 cases in 24 hours

The Argentine Ministry of Health announced yesterday Thursday that another 553 patients with COVID-19 died in the previous 24 hours, while another 32,291 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed.

The official pandemic of the new coronavirus in the Latin American country has reached this stage 79,873 deaths out of a total of 3,884,447 infections.

The selected active cases amount to 366,137, according to official data.

The new wave of pandemic that is hitting Argentina has brought it to the “worst moment” of the health crisis, according to the government, which is continuing the race to immunize the population. According to the latest data, as of yesterday, 13.2 million doses of vaccine had been administered, with 2.9 million citizens having received both.

Mexico: Another 216 deaths and nearly 3,200 new coronavirus cases

The Mexican Ministry of Health announced on Thursday 216 deaths of patients due to COVID-19 and 2,894 cases of SARS-CoV-2.

Officially, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the country of 126 million has reached 228,362 deaths out of a total of 2,426,822 infections.

But the Mexican government acknowledges that the official tally – the fourth heaviest in the world – is undervalued. Data on over-mortality released by the Ministry of Health earlier this year showed that COVID-19 deaths were at least 60% higher than those recorded.

Israel: Less than 200 selected active cases

The number of selected active cases of the new coronavirus in Israel has decreased by 122, falling to 193, the country’s Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

This is the lowest number announced by the ministry since March 14, 2020, ie 15 days after the detection of the first case.

The ministry said 10 SARS-CoV-2 infections had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 839,527.

The death of a patient with COVID-19 has increased the death toll from the pandemic to 6,416 so far.

The number of critically ill patients has risen to 41 (+1) out of a total of 77 people remaining in Israeli hospitals. The number of people hospitalized is the lowest since March 11, 2020.

Nearly six out of ten people have been completely immunized for COVID-19 so far in Israel.

Cyprus: One death and 53 new cases

The positivity rate is 0.12%, while the total number of cases is 72,626.
