Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of death from Covid-19, according to a report by the Sciensano Institute of Public Health, published in the Belang van Limburg newspaper, as reported by the French-language La Libre.
Unvaccinated people in the age group of 55 to 64 years are 47 times more likely to succumb to coronavirus than those who have been vaccinated.
Sciensano examined the vaccination status of 105 Belgians who died from Covid-19 between 6 September and 17 October 2021.
Of the 13 Belgians aged 18 to 54 who died from the virus, 12 were unvaccinated. In the 55-64 age group, six of the seven patients who died had not been vaccinated. Of the 19 patients between the ages of 65 and 74, 12 had not been vaccinated, unlike seven.
Over 75 years, in absolute numbers, the number of vaccinated patients who died from Covid-19 is higher than the number of unvaccinated. In the 75- to 84-year-old age group, 27 of the 44 dead from Covid were vaccinated, 17 were not. Among those over 85, 13 of the 22 patients who died had been vaccinated, 9 did not.
“It is above all important to compare the number of people who have died from Covid and their vaccination status with the rest of the Belgians who have been vaccinated or not by age group,” explains virologist Steven Van Gott in the Het Belang van Limburg newspaper. . “This way we see, for example, that people between the ages of 55 and 64 who have not been vaccinated are 47 times more likely to get the virus than those who have been vaccinated.”

In the age group between 65 and 74, unvaccinated people are 25 times more likely to die. In the 75-84 age group, people who have not been vaccinated are 9.7 times more likely to die. In people over 85, this risk for the unvaccinated is 7.3 times higher. Therefore, the protection of the vaccine against death resulting from the virus increases as the patient is younger.
