Coronavirus vaccine: Haiti received the first 500,000 doses

The first 500,000 doses coronavirus vaccines donated by the US government received on Wednesday (14/7) Haiti.

The batch was delivered as part of a US commitment to deliver about 12 million doses of vaccine to Caribbean and Latin American countries., according to an announcement by PAHO, its regional office World Health Organization (WHERE). These donations were made through the global COVAX mechanism, which distributes vaccines to poorer countries.

The National Vaccination Campaign has not yet begun in Haiti, which sank deeper into crisis after the assassination of its president, Jouvel Mois. Some private companies, however, have distributed installments to their employees.

The first results of a study conducted by the University of Haiti showed, however, that only 22% of Haitians accept the vaccine, according to Gene Gaff, UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

“The fact that vaccine doses will reach communities does not guarantee that communities will want to be vaccinated,” Gaf was quoted as saying by the Athens News Agency.

The Haitian Ministry of Health announced earlier this month that the country has so far recorded a total of about 19,400 cases of the new coronavirus and about 500 deaths from COVID-19. However, both of these numbers are probably lower than the real ones due to the few tests that are done.
