Coronavirus vaccine: They lure the undecided with beers and donuts

A beer, a dessert, discounts or money: in the US, initiatives are multiplied to persuade the undecided to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

About 56% of American adults, or more than 145 million people, have received at least one dose of the vaccine. However, the daily number of doses against Covid-19 given is declining in the country and the authorities want to reach the indifferent and the skeptics.

The president Joe Biden started a “new phase” of vaccinations yesterday targeting at least one dose for 70% of adults and 160 million Americans fully vaccinated by the national holiday of July 4th.

To achieve this, the federal government, states, collectives and many businesses are multiplying the incentives.

In this context, Joe Biden announced that he “works with important companies, such as supermarkets”, in order to ensure “Offers to consumers who go to these stores to be vaccinated”.

Discounts on match tickets are also provided for those who go to be vaccinated in cooperation with major sports associations, he said.

At the same time, various states are launching initiatives to attract skeptics.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has promised a free trial beer to any person over the age of 21 who gets the first dose of the vaccine. The program, called “One dose and one beer”, is expected to last until the end of the month.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bauser has announced a similar initiative: a free beer in exchange for the unique Johnson & Johnson vaccine. However, the offer is limited to a few hours tomorrow Thursday and in only one vaccination center in the federal capital.

Priority to young people

At the same wavelength, the Krispy Kreme donut chain promises a free dessert to all customers who show off their vaccination certificate. The offer, one dessert per day for each person, is given without any obligation to purchase and is valid in all stores in the country until the end of the year.

And to convince the undecided, the chain also offers every Monday until the end of the month a free coffee and dessert “to start the week well” and to choose the vaccine.

In a country where employees do not all have access to paid leave, Krispy Kreme guarantees its employees up to 4 hours leave to go for vaccinations.

But the best incentive remains money.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced yesterday that State officials will receive $ 100 if vaccinated, an incentive for the next 18 months. But those who will get the money after the first installment without going for the second will have to return the amount, he warns.

“This kind of incentive is another way to emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated,” he said, encouraging companies to do the same to persuade their employees.

In West Virginia, where vaccinations are open from the age of 16, Governor Jim Justice offers $ 100 in savings bonds for 16-35 year olds, an age group more reluctant to get vaccinated.

«Our young people must definitely be vaccinatedHe said last week. “Even if you do not get sick, you can infect others.”
