Coronavirus – WHO: Recommended third dose for immunocompromised vaccine

Committee of experts World Health Organization (WHO) recommended today, Monday, that an additional dose of vaccine be given against him coronavirus in individuals who are “moderately or severely immunosuppressed”, for all vaccines approved by the Agency.

WHO experts explained that not recommend the administration of a third dose for the general population, for which the Agency continues to recommend a moratorium until the end of the year, in order to release doses and give them to countries where the vaccination rate remains very low.

“Our recommendation now is for the immunocompromised to take an additional dose,” he said, to increase their immune response to the level of protection needed to prevent the development of serious forms of the disease that require hospitalization or cause death. Kate O’Brien, Director of the Vaccination Department of the WHO.

Immunosuppressed – whose human immune system is not strong enough – were excluded from clinical trials that allowed vaccination protocols to be defined.

“This third dose (ie WHO-approved vaccines requires 2 initial doses in addition to the one-dose Janssen vaccine) should be separated from the second dose by a to three months“, ODBrian added.

The same committee announced that a third dose, for the elderly 60 years and older, is necessary when it comes to patients who have been immunized with Covid vaccines by Chinese companies Sinovac and Sinopharm, as broadcast by ΑΠΕ ΜΠΕ.

The third dose could be another vaccine of another type, the WHO SAGE committee clarified during today’s press conference.

It is recalled that the WHO has approved, to date, the two vaccines with mRNA technology of Moderna and Pfizer-Biontech, the two Chinese vaccines of Sinopharm and Sinovac, the vaccine of Johnson & Johnson and that of Astrazeneca.
