After a period of joint growth in cases of flu and Covid-19, Brazil sees the coronavirus once again taking the lead in the identified cases of respiratory syndrome – a move already expected by specialists, virologist Anderson Brito told the press. CNN this Monday (14th).
According to Brito, the fact that Brazilians have already faced the Influenza virus for years and have developed vaccines against the disease meant that the effects of the last flu outbreak were overcome more quickly than the cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
“If we already have a population facing a virus that is not new, we see a dynamic of a sudden increase in cases, followed by a decrease”, he explained.
“The Covid virus is different. Now there is vaccination, but there is still a portion of the population that has not been vaccinated and these people are more vulnerable – once the Ômicron gets there, it spreads more easily”, said the virologist.
“There is this great confusion because we face dozens of respiratory viruses. If you are experiencing symptoms that look like a cold or flu, it is most likely Covid – they are similar, but the flu virus is not as much in circulation compared to the coronavirus, especially the Ômicron variant”, he explained.
Like Influenza, Covid-19 “will not disappear”, highlighted Anderson Brito, who also pondered that protections against infection, with emphasis on the complete vaccination cycle, the use of masks and attention to local movements of the coronavirus, will create an environment that is less and less conducive to further outbreaks of the disease.
“Each municipality and region of the country is in its own dynamics. [da pandemia]. The important thing is that we look at the situation in our municipality to make decisions to avoid risks”, he declared.
