Corpo de Monarco is veiled in the Portela court, in Rio de Janeiro

With the Portela flag over the coffin and on the court of the school where he was the honorary president, Hildemar Diniz, the master Monarco, has her body veiled in Rio de Janeiro, since 11:00 am this Sunday (12). The burial is scheduled for 4 pm, at Inhaúma Cemetery.

Monarco’s wake brought together dozens of people at the Portela court, such as singers Diogo Nogueira and Paulinho da Viola, singer Marisa Monte and the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes.

“Of the most Brazilian of all songs, Monarco represents a generation, a moment. And Portela loses such an important person in its history. He is the biggest brand that represented our Portela. He will be missed a lot, but his legacy is indescribable”, declared the mayor.

Monarco died on Saturday (11), aged 88. He had been hospitalized since the beginning of November at Hospital Cardoso Fontes, in the Jacarepaguá neighborhood, where he underwent surgery on his digestive system.

The widow, Olinda Diniz, received the compliments of those who went to pay their last tribute to the master Monarco.

In addition to the flag of the samba school, the coffin carried a flag from the Unidos de Jacarezinho school, an association that the singer attended in the 1960s, and from the football club América.

Other samba schools also sent their flags as a way to honor the composer.

According to Portela, the singer-songwriter’s last performance took place in October, at the school’s traditional feijoada. He arrived at the youth association and, at just 17 years old, he entered the composers’ wing. His career as a samba dancer went beyond Portela and had the release of 16 albums.
