Corruption charges filed against former Honduran president Lobo

The criminal prosecution for corruption against him should be dropped without further ado former president Porfirio Lobo (2010-2014) decided yesterday Thursday judge in Honduras a representative of the judiciary in the Central American state told AFP.

Mr. Lobo, 76, was “irrevocably” cleared of the charges against him, as it was not proven that he had “any kind of responsibility” for what he was accused of, explained justice spokesman Melvin Duarte.

In October, prosecutors brought criminal charges against Mr. Lobo, another former right-wing president, Juan Orlando Hernandez, and six former public officials. He accused them of setting up a corruption ring that, from 2010 to 2013, embezzled 288 million lei ($11.6 million) from public coffers.

According to the representative of the Honduran judiciary, the process continues against Juan Orlando Hernandezwho ruled Honduras from 2014 to 2022 and is currently on remand in the US, where he risks a life sentence for cocaine trafficking.

“I had nothing to do” with this case, Mr Lobo told the press after learning he had been cleared as reported by the Athens News Agency citing AFP. “I'm not saying I'm no saint, but when it comes to drug dealing, gangs and public administration, I've never pocketed a dime.”he assured.

The former president's son, Fabio Lobo, was sentenced to serve 24 years in prison for cocaine trafficking by a US court in 2017. Another of his sons, Said Lobo, was murdered at the age of 23 by executioners along with three other youths in July 2022 , as he was leaving a discotheque in Tegucigalpa. While, also in 2022, the wife of the former head of state, Rosa Bonilla, was sentenced to serve 14 years in prison after being found guilty at her trial of fraud and misappropriation of funds intended for social programs. However, she was allowed to serve her sentence at home.
