Corruption in Croatia: For a seven -month imprisonment of a former minister for abuse of European resources

A former minister, Gabriyella Zalats, was today sentenced to seven months in prison by a Zagreb court for paying her European resources in restaurants, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office said. Zalats, who acknowledged her actions, was between 2016-19, Minister of Regional Development and European Resources, in the coalition government led by the HDZ Conservative Party from which she comes from. She was removed these duties in the reshuffle made by Prime Minister Andrei Plenkovic. The court ruled the 46 -year -old former minister guilty of “abuse of power”, according to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. During her term she paid, at least nine times, her personal expenses in a restaurant using the official government costs account. It thus damaged the budget of approximately 10,000 euros, mainly at the expense of the European Union and the Croatian state.
