COSMOTE TV: The arrival of the Olympic ‘antidote’ to the loss of the Premier League

At the beginning of the pay-TV, the OTE Group was considering whether to enrich the Conn-x TV platform with sports content, namely football. He did it, responding to the trend of the time.

In fact, in 2010 he secured, for the first time, the rights of the Greek Cup. In the following years he invested in the major foreign football leagues, most notably the English, the famous Premier League.

Last year, the OTE Group and COSMOTE TV made the “bang”, acquiring the rights of 8 teams of the Greek Super League, inflicting a “blow” on the competitor NOVA.

Yesterday, COSMOTE TV further strengthened its position in the Greek championship, announcing the arrival of Olympiacos for a period of 3 years.

However, in the meantime, COSMOTE TV “lost” the Premier League, which returned to rival NOVA for a period of 7 years.

According to executives of the telecommunications market, the question that arises is: Will the arrival of Olympiacos bring to COSMOTE TV more subscribers in relation to the apparent losses from the Premier League? By the beginning of August, when the tournaments start, the answers will have been given.

The influence of the Greek Super League on COSMOTE TV

According to the financial results of OTE, the arrival of the Greek Super League expanded the subscribers of Cosmote TV, mainly in the third and fourth quarter of 2021, as shown in the relevant table.

It is noted that, apart from Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, AEK, OFI, Volos, Ionikos, Panetolikos and Lamia (if it is not demoted), COSMOTE TV has in sports: the

Greek Cup, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League & UEFA Europa Conference League until 2024, the FA Cup (English Cup) until 2024, the Serie A (Italy) until 2024, the Liga Portugal Bwin (Portugal) until 2023, the Premiership (Scotland) until 2024, the NBA, Formula 1,2,3, WRC, WRX, ERC and MotoGP and the ATP World Tour Finals, ATP Masters 1000 and ATP 500.

The evolution of the subscription base of COSMOTE TV

At the end of 2021, the customer base of COSMOTE TV reached 624 thousand customers, achieving an increase of 8.5% in relation to 2020, but also an increase in revenue.
