Could Ômicron variant be the beginning of the end of the pandemic?

The world is facing a wave of increasing cases of the variant Omicron.

Now, researchers are debating whether the most infectious strain of Covid-19 — but less aggressive — could mean the beginning of the end of the pandemic.

Zvika Granot, a doctor from Israel, said in an interview with CNN that when you look at past pandemics like the Spanish flu, they went through waves very similar to what we’re seeing with the coronavirus.

And that the variants that appear are more infectious, but less aggressive. “Most of the vaccinated populations that became infected do not have serious illnesses,” he said. According to him, this is how immunity is gained.

Margareth Dalcolmo, a pulmonologist and researcher at Fiocruz, said that Ômicron could mean the beginning of the end of the pandemic. “But there must be great care in this interpretation.”
