Couldn’t survive in Russia after sanctions, says Brazilian student

The economic sanctions applied by Western countries to Russia had an impact on the life of Brazilian student Ricardo Celle, who is studying medicine in the Russian city of Kursk.

In an interview with CNN Radiohe said that, once the measures were tightened, he “had no way of surviving in Russia”: “Most Russians ran to the banks to buy foreign currency, I did the same thing and left [do país] due to sanctions.”

Ricardo arrived in Brazil last Thursday: “I was very affected, I couldn’t get into any bank account.”

His university allowed him to participate in classes virtually: “I left everything paid for and come back when I can, when I work around the situation.”

In the region where he lives, the student said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is well regarded” and that there was guidance from mayors to “try to normalize” the invasion of Ukraine.

“They removed sanitary restrictions, allowed access to shopping malls, as if everything was fine, some gave guidance on how to store food and medicine, but they said that the conflict would be resolved in less than a month,” he said.

Ricardo Celle also reported that the Russians avoid using the word war and treat it only as a “military operation”: “But most of the people I talked to are not in favor, but, in order not to have a problem with work, for example, they are cautious .”

“The country oppresses a little in the face of opinions contrary to the government,” he added.

The student also stressed that there is a lot of nationalism in Russia, something he considers beautiful, and that “they believe they are doing the right thing”.
