Council of Europe asks Britain to oppose government’s illegal immigration bill

The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Dunia Mijatovic asked them today British MPs to oppose the government’s bill for the irregular migrationcomplaining that it is “inconsistent” with the country’s “international obligations”.

In a letter to its members House of Commons and House of Lords released today, Mijatovic wrote that “it is vital that MPs prevent the adoption of bills that are inconsistent with Britain’s international obligations”. The commissioner was referring to the controversial bill promoted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government, which provides for the immediate deportation of all those who arrive in the country illegally.

Conservatives against human rights organizations

The bill, which many support conservative MPs but criticize human rights organizations, like the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, foresees that those migrants who enter Britain illegally will be sent back to their countries of origin or to a “safe third country”, such as Rwanda, under an agreement that London has already signed with that african country. At the same time, illegal immigrants who are caught will be banned from entering Britain for life.

With this bill, the Sunak government wants to prevent immigrants from making the dangerous crossing Channel. Mijatovic, however, worries that “the provisions of the bill are in clear and direct conflict with the fundamental and established rules regarding human rights».

“The passage of this bill will exacerbate the already significant decline seen in recent years in Britain in the field of protection of immigrants, of asylum seekers and refugees”, complained the commissioner.

At the same time he asked the British government to expand the possibilities of legal and safe immigration and recommended that a framework be created so that people who have need protection or have a right of residence in Britain for other reasons.
