Council of Europe: European states to include the concept of consent in the definition of rape

“Too many European countries still do not include the concept of consent in their definition of rape,” Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berchet said today. In his statement, Berce called on European states to implement the Istanbul Convention, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. According to this text, which aims to end gender-based violence, the definition of rape is based on the absence of free consent “in contrast to traditional definitions of rape based on the use of violence”.
