Council questions PM action that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy in RJ

The National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (Conanda) approved, this Tuesday (8), a series of measures in response to the action of the Military Police (PM) that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old teenager, on Sunday. (6), in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

The decision took place at an extraordinary meeting called specifically to address the matter. Among the agreed measures is the publication of a disclaimer and the preparation of a document with recommendations to avoid occurrences of police lethality.

A CNN found out from Conanda counselors that the text of the first document will have a tone of “deep indignation and repudiation of any and all actions that violate the human rights of children and adolescents in Brazilian territory”.

The note will also ask for justice based on a swift investigation to hold those responsible for this type of recurrent crime in our society accountable.

At the meeting, the councilors also demanded explanations from the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, on what measures are being taken so that this form of violence does not occur again.

Figures from the Brazilian Public Security Forum show that 6,400 people were killed in police interventions in 2022. According to the survey, among the victims, 7.5% were between 12 and 17 years old, and 45.4% were aged between 12 and 17 years. 18 to 24 years.

In addition to police lethality, the number of intentional violent deaths in Brazil is even higher. In 2022, also according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum, Brazil recorded more than 47,000 intentional violent deaths, with 76.5% of the victims being black.
