Counting in Argentina: Massa and Milei lead vote count in the presidential election

In the first published partial of the Argentine elections, government leader Sergio Massa has 35% of the valid votes in Argentina, against 30% for the far-right candidate, Javier Milei. In third place comes Patricia Bullrich, with 23.61%. The result was announced at around 9:20 pm, with 78% of the ballots counted.

Shortly after the polls closed, at 6 pm, the government explained that partial results would only be released after consolidated information, which could undergo minimal changes.

“We want to be responsible (…) when we have results that are absolutely consolidated and representative of the jurisdictions, we will publish them. It means that they will be results that subsequently undergo the least possible change to bring certainty, trust and tranquility to the population, through the transparency of the system”, explained the general secretary of the Presidency, Julio Vitobello.

74% of voters went to the polls this Sunday, according to Argentine electoral authorities, which the secretary praised as an appreciation of the democratic system.

“The Argentine people, with this percentage of participation, demonstrated once again their commitment to the democratic system, especially in this year in which we complete 40 years of the democratic system, with everyone knowing what it cost the Argentine people to reach the democratic system” , he said.

Vitobello was accompanied, in his statement, by the national electoral director, Marcos Schiavi, and the president of Correio, Vanesa Piesciorovski. Two important people.

There were five candidates running for the Casa Rosada: the governmentist Sergio Massa (Unión por la Patria), the libertarian Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza), the liberal Patricia Bullrich (Juntos por el Cambio), the centrist Juan Schiaretti (Hacemos por Nuestro País) and left-wing oppositionist Myriam Bregman (Frente de Izquierda).

Massa, Milei and Bullrich were the top three in voting intention polls in recent weeks.

How the president is elected in Argentina

Unlike Brazil, to be elected in the first round a candidate does not need to win more than 50% of the valid votes, but more than 45% or more than 40% with a difference of more than 10% from the second place.

If neither of the two scenarios occurs, the second round must be held. This year, it is scheduled for November 19th.

All elected authorities will assume their respective mandates on December 10th.

Votes outside Argentina

The Argentine Consulate in São Paulo reported that it registered a high participation of Argentine voters, without specifying the number. In total, 11,900 Argentines are eligible to vote in São Paulo.

In Israel and Ukraine, territories currently at war, more than 14,000 voters were unable to vote for president, vice-president, 24 senators, 130 deputies, in addition to 43 Mercosur parliamentarians.

Unión por la Patria received 27.27% of the votes. The party included Massa and Juan Grabois.
