Countries are signing up for Ukraine peace summit, says Switzerland

Switzerland has received more than 50 applications from the more than 160 delegations the neutral country has invited to a summit next month intended to pave the way for a peace process in Ukraine, President Viola Amherd said on Wednesday (15).

In January, Amherd agreed to hold the peace summit at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Swiss leader participated in a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after a bilateral meeting between the two, and said that her government wants the summit to have broad participation.

She added that China has not yet said whether it will attend and that Russia has not been invited.

Diplomats and foreign policy experts say talks expected to be held near the Swiss city of Lucerne will likely focus on building consensus on how to reduce the risks of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Almost half of the countries that confirmed participation are not European and, probably, the list will continue to change until the last minute, according to Amhred.

Switzerland is trying to persuade more countries from the so-called Global South and China to participate, he added.

“Work continues at full speed,” Amherd said.
