Countries need to present short-term goals, says director of UN Global Compact

Countries should take advantage of the Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss the climate future more immediately, with targets that are met within shorter deadlines than the current ones, said the executive director of the UN Global Compact in the Brazil, Carlo Pereira, in an interview with CNN this Sunday (31).

“A lot is said about what is going to be done, when it is going to happen, establishing long-term goals. We need countries and companies to come up with short-term science-based goals and a work plan for achieving them. A person from the highest level of the Brazilian government told me that there will be anticipation regarding the goal of illegal deforestation. This is very much expected”, he said.

“This discussion of a global low carbon economy is extremely welcome for Brazil. Our energy matrix is very clean, which is why our products have a small carbon load. There is no one who produces aluminum and steel with a lower carbon content than Brazil. Nobody has more forests than we do, but we need to present the plan and comply with it”, said Pereira.

The executive director of the UN Global Compact in Brazil also stated that the country is in a position to play its role, if it takes the idea seriously.

“We’ve already made a massive reduction in deforestation in the past, we know it can be done. What is not possible is to have an increase in deforestation from last year to this one in the middle of the pandemic, of 9.5%. This for a negotiation table is very bad”, he pointed out.
