The countries are negotiating the inclusion of Israel’s right to defense in the next UN Security Council resolution as long as it is accompanied by conditions.
According to Itamaraty sources, there is already diplomatic language that allows this to be done without giving a “blank check” to Israel. The attempt is to avoid a veto from the United States.
The USA was the only country to veto the Brazilian resolution, which had the highest number of votes in favor so far: 12.
This afternoon, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken agreed during a phone call to instruct their teams to work on the text to reach an agreement.
“We are going to see the level of flexibility of the Americans and also test the acceptance of other countries”, said a source in Brazilian diplomacy.
With the inclusion of Israel’s right to defense, Russia and China could become obstacles. Both countries vetoed an American resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas. The resolution that has been created, however, by the 10 non-member countries, under the coordination of Brazil, is much more conciliatory.
