A survey released by Fiocruz indicates that by April, More than 31 thousand suspected cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) in the country.
According to the information, the Respiratory Sincient Virus (VSR), Rinovirus and SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) are primarily responsible for acute evolution in adults and tend to make worse with the arrival of winter.
“Severe acute respiratory syndrome occurs when the patient has a considerable worsening of respiratory symptoms caused by infectious agents. For example, if in a virus are common light cough, runny nose and tiredness, in a SRAG scenario are already present constant breath and falling oxygen saturation. Below 95% is already considered a very low saturation,” explained Infectiologist, an infectologist, Niterói Hospital Complex (CHN), from Rede Américas.
There are still cases where the patient has not been treated correctly and can evolve to SRAG, caused by influenza A and B, Covid-19, VSR, Rinovirus, Adenovirus and Parainfluenza. The most common symptoms include persistent cough, difficulty breathing, fever, chest squeaking and excessive tiredness and, in even more severe cases, respiratory failure, leading the patient to intubation.
“Among children under the age of 2, the biggest risk for SRAG is in influenza virus infections and respiratory sintendic virus. Today, VSR represents up to 75% of bronchiolitis and 40% of pneumonia in children in this range,” says Christine Tamar, CHN’s pediatric coordinator. “We also observed a considerable influence of rhinoviruses between patients between 5 and 14 years,” he ponders.
To combat the increase in cases of the syndrome, the Foundation has pointed out strategies such as immunization through flu vaccines, Covid-19 and VSR, as well as the way to protect babies against VSR is through monoclonal antibodies-such as that launched at the beginning of 2025 and available in private vaccination companies.
The patient should be referred for medical care in case of identification of respiratory symptoms.
“The earlier the virus causing respiratory disease is treated, the less chance the patient will have to develop the respiratory syndrome in its more severe form,” Christine concluded.
