Coup in Myanmar: Military regime arrests two more journalists

Its military regime Myanmar arrested two other local journalists, it broadcast yesterday, Saturday, a television network belonging to the army, as the repression of the media continues after the February 1st coup.

Sithu Aung Mead, a columnist for Frontier Myanmar and a commentator for the Voice of America radio station, and Het Het Kine, an outside associate who worked for BBC Media Action, were arrested on August 15, Mya TV reported.

In Sithu Aung Mid Allegations of harassment and dissemination of false information were posted on social media posts, which were according to Myawaddy TV critical of the country’s military regime and urged people to join strikes and support outlawed opposition movements.

Het Het Kine has been charged with aiding and abetting wanted criminal Sitho Aung Midt and supporting a shadowy National Unity Government.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) yesterday declared their detention illegal.

“We strongly condemn the arbitrary conditions of their detention, which reflect the brutality with which the military junta threatens journalists.”, said Daniel Bastar, who heads the RSF Asia-Pacific bureau.

In Myanmar, there is still a lot of instability and opposition to the military regime, while more than 1,000 people have been killed by security forces, according to an activist organization that monitors deaths and mass arrests by junta organs.

The military, which has revoked the licenses of many media outlets, says it respects the role of the media, but will not tolerate the transmission of news that it believes to be false or likely to cause public unrest.

A report by the Committee to Protect Journalists released last month notes that The Myanmar junta has effectively criminalized independent journalism.

At the same time, Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on the military regime in Myanmar, which has arrested 98 journalists since the coup, to stop persecuting journalists. Of those arrested, 46 remained in custody at the end of July.
