Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who also chairs the regional Economic Community of West African States, said today that the best solution to resolving the crisis in Niger it is diplomacy. Tinubu and the leaders of the other ECOWAS countries “they would prefer a solution reached through diplomatic, peaceful means” said his spokesman Azuri Ngelale.
He noted that this position will be maintained “pending some other solution that may or may not be found during the emergency session” of ECOWAS on Thursday.
The leaders of the ECOWAS countries had given an appointment to coup plotters of Niger until midnight last Friday to restore ousted president Mohamed Bazoum, even threatening military intervention according to the Athens News Agency.
Ngelale also said that Tinubu has decided to impose new financial sanctions on persons and entities involved in the military coup in Niger.
