Couple of “hoarders” are arrested during an operation to remove rubbish from a property

A couple was detained, this Monday (22), when they resisted an operation by the City of Araçatuba, in the interior of São Paulo, to remove garbage and rubble from the family's property, located in the Parque Verde neighborhood.

The city's Social Assistance Department believes that residents suffer from compulsive hoarding disorder, a condition that makes it difficult for an individual to get rid of possessions.

With a court order, municipal employees and representatives of the Guardianship Council were at the residence yesterday morning to begin removing the accumulated debris.

The couple resisted the actions of the Public Authorities at the site and even attacked a municipal guard who was monitoring the cleaning. The military police were called and the two were taken to the police station. The woman needed medical attention and even threatened to set fire to a health unit in the city, which required constant surveillance by the PM.

A task force was set up in the municipality to assist adults and young people, aged 16 and 18, who also live in the property. The municipal management will offer social assistance, in addition to assistance aimed at the physical and psychological health of the four residents of the place.

On the first day of action, which was attended by around 40 people, 30 tons of rubbish were removed from the property. The forecast is that up to 70 tons can be removed in the operation, which continues this Tuesday (23).

In addition to dead animal objects, such as a dog and more than 60 venomous animals were located at the site.
