Couple sets fire to neighbors’ house after fight over cat; woman died

A couple was arrested on Tuesday (7) suspected of setting fire to a residence after an argument over a cat, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the metropolitan region of Recife. The fire, which occurred on Sunday (5), resulted in the death of Samara Cristina, aged 25, and left three other members of the same family seriously injured. According to the Pernambuco Civil Police, the case was registered as a homicide and arson.

The fire was reportedly caused by a disagreement between neighbors, related to the death of a third person’s cat. Witnesses report that the 20-year-old man used flammable fuel to set fire to the house, which was burned from the outside to the inside.

After the fire was controlled, the victims were found by neighbors. They were unconscious hugging each other in the bathroom of the residence and were taken to Hospital da Restauração. in the central area of ​​Recife.

On Monday (6), young Samara Cristina succumbed to her injuries and died in hospital. Samara’s parents and sister remain hospitalized in the hospital. The condition of the three is considered serious, but stable.

In a note sent to CNN the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat reported that the Military Police located the suspected couple in the city of Belo Jardim, in Agreste de Pernambuco, where they were trying to escape.

The man was arrested in the act, while the woman was released after giving a statement. The suspect confessed to the crime and stated that he did everything alone. He will be taken to a custody hearing scheduled for this Wednesday (8). The Civil Police continues to investigate the case.
