Uruguayan Sebastián Avellino, physical trainer at Universitário, a Peruvian club, was convicted in the second instance by the São Paulo Court of Justice for racist acts committed after a match against Corinthians, in São Paulo, in July last year.
The conviction occurred after the assistant's lawyers appealed the decision handed down in December 2023 by the first instance. The first decision sentenced Avellino to a sentence of two years in prison, which was replaced by the payment of two minimum wages to a social institution.
The São Paulo Court of Justice analyzed the appeal presented by Sebastián's lawyers and denied the appeal to change the conviction.
On the day of the crime, Avellino was arrested in the act after Universitário's defeat to Corinthians, 1-0, at the Neo Química Arena. Witnesses stated that he imitated a monkey towards the Corinthians at the end of the game. After a custody hearing, the court ordered his preventive detention.
At the time, the Universitário club criticized the arrest and stated that “Sebastián Avellino has been treated as a delinquent in Brazil”.
The club classified the decision as “arbitrary”, said that Corinthians fans had offended their players and stated that they “reject any type of discrimination”.
