The Rio de Janeiro Court converted the arrest of those suspected of killing Gabriel Mongenot, aged 25, to preventive arrest during a custody hearing this Tuesday (21). The young man was from Mato Grosso do Sul, but was in the capital of Rio to attend singer Taylor Swift’s concert.
Gabriel and four other friends were on Copacabana beach, talking near the sea, when they were approached by Jonathan Batista Barbosa and Anderson Henrique Brandão. The pair allegedly asked for cigarettes, but the group of friends refused and left the place.

The two men approached again and announced the robbery, taking some of the group’s belongings. According to Gabriel’s friends, he was sleeping at the time of the attack, was scared when he woke up and reacted, and was then stabbed.
Judge Rafael de Almeida Rezende emphasized the “extreme brutality” of the action and pointed out that “the specific gravity of the crime demonstrates the dangerousness of those in custody and the need for imprisonment to protect public order”.
