Court denies house arrest for accused of killing actor Jeff Machado

Judge Alessandra da Rocha Lima Roidis, from the 1st Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro, denied the request to replace preventive detention with house arrest made by the defense of Jeander Vinicius da Silva Braga, accused in the death of actor Jeff Machado.

The defendant requested a change in his detention condition citing financial difficulties and the need to care for his children. However, it was proven during the process that Braga's children are under their mother's care, which invalidates the argument that he would be solely responsible for them.

The judge emphasized that the defendant does not meet the legal requirements for granting the measure, as defined in articles 318 and 318-A of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“The judge acted correctly in understanding the clear need to maintain the prison,” said lawyer Jairo Magalhães, who represents the actor’s family.

Remember the crime

Actor Jeff Machado, who was 44 years old, was found dead in March 2023. The body was buried inside a chest under two meters of concrete in the backyard of a house in the Campo Grande neighborhood, west of Rio de Janeiro.

The investigation conducted by the Whereabouts Discovery Police Station (DDPA) indicates that the actor was killed on January 23. According to the complaint from the Public Ministry of Rio, Machado was drugged, asphyxiated and strangled with a telephone cord by TV producer Bruno de Souza Rodrigues. Later, his body was placed in the trunk itself, buried and concreted.

During the third hearing of the case, in January this year, Jeander stated that he only helped transport the body to the place where the corpse was found and expressed regret for having helped with the burial. He also alleged that Bruno coerced him into supporting a previously agreed version of events.
