Court maintains arrest of militia leader arrested in the west zone of Rio

This Thursday (26), the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro decided to maintain the preventive detention of Peterson Luiz de Almeida, leader of the militia called “Bonde do Zinho”, which operates in the regions of Sepetiba and Nova Sepetiba, located in the area west of the capital.

According to the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), Peterson was arrested in August this year, in compliance with a temporary arrest warrant issued by the 1st Court Specialized in Criminal Organization of the TJRJ.

At the beginning of October, the accused, known as “Pet” and “Flamengo”, had his custody hearing, in which his temporary arrest was maintained by judge Mariana Medeiros.

Based on the information presented by the parties, the judge at the Custody Hearing Center (CEAC) understood that there were no reasons to revoke the arrest. The judge considered that the temporary arrest was made based on a warrant issued by the Criminal Processing Center, which was within its validity period.

The arrest of the accused continued Operation Dynasty, launched by the Specialized Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (GAECO/MPRJ) and the Federal Police in August 2022, to dismantle the criminal organization of which he is a member.

“Bonde do Zinho”

The “Bonde do Zinho” militia is one of the most powerful in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. The group is responsible for several crimes, such as extortion, land grabbing and drug trafficking.

This week, a Civil Police operation resulted in the death of Matheus da Silva Resende, also known as “Faustão” or “Teteus” and nephew of the militia leader, Luís Antônio da Silva Braga, known as Zinho. The death of “Faustão” triggered a wave of attacks coordinated by “Bonde do Zinho,” causing terror throughout the city.

The attacks resulted in the burning of 35 buses, four trucks and a train, as well as two BRT stations.
