Court orders end of Rio municipal school teachers’ strike

The Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice ordered last Thursday (28) the immediate end of the strike by teachers in the Rio municipal network, which began on Monday (25), and the return to work. The decision was taken by the president of the TJ-RJ, judge Ricardo Rodrigues Cardoso.

A workers’ meeting to decide whether or not to continue the strike was scheduled for this Friday morning (29). There is no decision yet.

The measure responds to a request made by Rio City Hall which, in a collective strike dispute, argues that the strike is illegal. The municipality argues that there was no prior notice regarding the strike movement and no attempt at dialogue between representatives of the category and the Municipal Department of Education.

According to the TJ-RJ, the activities of education employees are considered essential, which, by law, limits the exercise of the right to strike. The court ordered that the city hall deduct the salary proportional to the days of illegal stoppage. A hearing to attempt an agreement was scheduled for December 11th.

In a note published on social media, the State Union of Education Professionals repudiates “the different tactics of the government and the courts in criminalizing the movement and prohibiting the right to strike: from salary discounts, withdrawal of union licenses, threat of punishments and decree of the illegality of the strike”.
