The Court of São Paulo determined, last Friday (8), that the University of São Paulo accepts the enrollment of a student in one of its courses. The young man had obtained a place through the quota system, but USP denied his enrollment claiming that the proof presented was invalid.
According to the defense of Caíque Toledo, 20 years old, documents from him and family members were presented proving that the student is “brown”. Even so, upon registration, USP denied the student admission to the Production Engineering course.
According to the defense, Caíque always declared himself as “brown”. In fact, when registering for the University for All Program (Prouni), the student identified himself as mixed race.
The defense also claims that part of Caíque's family is mixed race and that he has Afro-descendant origins. It should be noted that the student spent his entire school life in public schools.
In a note, the University of São Paulo says that “any court order will be complied with”.
Note – USP
Any court orders will be complied with by USP and all information explaining and substantiating the hetero-identification procedure will be presented in court.
