The Paraíba Court rejected the request for house arrest made by the defense of Fernando Paredes Cunha Lima, 81, a pediatrician accused of raping children in his office in João Pessoa.
The decision was taken by judge Shirley Abrantes Moreira Regis, from the 4th Criminal Court, on Monday (18). The doctor has been on the run for more than two weeks, since his preventive detention was ordered by the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Justice of Paraíba (TJPB).
Last Friday (15), the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) maintained the pediatrician’s preventive detention. The decision was taken by Minister Daniela Teixeira, who highlighted the seriousness of the accusations and the need to ensure public order.
Fernando is being investigated in two cases involving six victims, all children, and is accused of committing rapes of vulnerable people during medical appointments.
The pediatrician’s defense informed the CNN which will appeal both decisions, both from the TJPB and the STJ. Lawyer Lucas Mendes Ferreira argued that the doctor does not pose a risk to public order or criminal investigation, which, according to him, has already been completed, and stated that he believes that the arrest order will be reviewed.
