Court sentences man who killed doorman in downtown Rio to 22 years in prison

The man who killed doorman José Jailton de Araújo, in a building in the center of Rio, was sentenced to 22 years in prison, according to a decision by the 37th Criminal Court. The case happened in August last year.

At trial, Fagner Wilson Nunes Chamarelli, 22 years old, claimed that he received information from a colleague about an amount of R$200,000 that was on the roof of the building’s meeting room. According to him, after getting into a physical fight with the doorman, the “gun went off unintentionally”. Fagner also said he wanted to “ask God and his family for forgiveness for what happened.”

During the action, the now convicted man, who was disguised as an app delivery person, entered the building together with a resident and simulated talking on the phone.

Soon after, he announces the robbery and goes to the reception. The two argue and the killer slaps José in the face, and then they get into a physical fight.

Finally, the criminal shoots and kills José. He even comes back and searches the entrance, and in the end, he escapes on a motorcycle.

Fagner’s defense asked for the right to appeal freely, but the request was denied.
